Target Multiplication
Another TARGET game for any number of players or for the whole class as a lesson starter. You want to win so THINK MATHEMATICALLY. To get near to the target of 1000 you must get the hundreds digit multiplied by the single digit number close to 10. So for those 2 digits aim for: 1×9, 2×4, 3×3, 4×2, 5×2, 6×1, 7×1 or 8×1. Think about which of those is best.
You will need a set of cards numbered 0 to 9 or a 0-9 spinner.
Draw a card or spin the spinner and call out the digit.
Players must write the digit in one of the top four boxes. Once a number is written its position cannot be changed. Repeat three more times.
Then the players multiply the 3-digit number by the 1-digit number.
The player (or players) with the product closest to 1000 wins.
Score 1 point for a win.
This is a game of chance but if players think strategically when placing the numbers they can increase their chance of winning.

Alternatively the game can be played by pairs or small groups of learners and they will need a set of cards or a spinner for each group. Each player draws a multiplication grid like the one shown. They spin the spinner 4 times and each time write in the number in one of the boxes in their grid. Then they do the multiplication and find out who is closest to 1000 by finding the difference between their answer and 1000. They should check each others’ calculations.
