The picture shows some shadows cast by solid (3 dimensional) objects as well as some flat (2 dimensional) shapes.

Describe 3D objects that could have made these shadows. There is more than one answer for each shadow.

Can you draw different shadows that could be made by the same objects?

What sort of shadows can be made with these 3D objects?

I did it with the Grade 6 learners. It was the most challenging activity i got many answers. They discussed their answers using objects collected when dealing with 3d shapes, circle answers were cylinder, sphere. For squares answers were prism, cube. For triangle tetrahedron, pyramid for rectangle, prism they were supporting their answers looking at the objects infront of them.

Casting shadows on the wall using sunlight, or a torch, and getting learners to discuss what 3D objects could make the shadows, is a great activity.

You can also use this activity for work on enlargements.
