interpreting-equationsThis lesson is about moving between algebraic equations and the statements that they represent. This activity should be given to the class as a formative assessment activity: it is designed to provide the teacher with information about the learners’ current levels of understanding.

During a short introduction the teacher emphasises the importance of defining variables and learners practice writing an algebraic equations to describe a statement. After the introduction, the learner work in pairs or small groups on a card matching activity. They are given an A3 poster with 2 different sets of small cards (equation cards and statement cards). They are asked to match the equation cards with the statement that they describe and to stick them on the poster. After the activity the teacher holds a class discussion aiming to go over the answers and to elicit something about the students’ understanding.
